Many have chided President Bush for saying, in the beginning days of this war, that we would prosecute this war, whenever, and wherever we needed to. He stated in no uncertain terms that if you stood against the US, that we were not about to turn tail and run. We were no longer going to leave men abandoned on the field of battle (see Desert One, or Black Hawk Down), but if they wanted to play with the "Big Boys" then 'bring it on'.
It seems that some suicide bombers in Iraq tried to do exactly that - the only problem was they didn't count on the Marines! Thinking that one bomb would certainly fail, a massive effort to distract then destroy the base populated by the best and brightest warriors in the world was tried.
The effort was tried - and failed miserably. Why? Well, simply because no one told the Marines that they weren't fighting fair. I mean, is it fair that Corporal Joshua Butler did what a famous movie line about Marines says they do? Clint Eastwood in the movie Heartbreak Ridge says that Marines are supposed to "adapt and overcome", Butler must have watched this movie a few times, or maybe he listened to his drill instructors in boot camp, or NCOs before he became one - or maybe he is just a quintessential Marine. In any scenario, Cpl. Butler performed above and beyond the call of duty. And in doing so he didn't fight fair. He refused to cower and be afraid. He refused to "stay safe" and let his Marine brothers fend for themselves.
He achieved a modicum of what we all search for in this type of situation -
"Peace, through superior firepower!"
Semper Fi Marine!
